About VPP Economics

Independent analysis of who gets paid in virtual power plants, and whether joining one makes economic sense.

VPP Economics is part of the Ownership Economics family of independent sites, alongside Battery Economics, Heatpump Economics, and Drive Economics. Each site models the full cost and value of one category of energy decision.

Virtual power plants cut across all of them. A battery, an EV, a heat pump thermostat, and a water heater can all be paid to help the grid — and in a growing number of places, the same household can stack those payments. VPP Economics follows that money: where the value is created, who captures it, and what reaches the device owner.

Independence

We have no affiliation with, sponsorship from, or commercial relationship with any utility, aggregator, platform, or device maker named on this site. We don’t take referral fees for program enrollment.

Where this is going

Next, we will combine devices from across the family — batteries, EV charging, thermostats, water heaters, and solar — into whole-home scenarios for specific geographies, so you can see which combinations pay where you live.
